Mr. Herrera attended the University of Washington and earned a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance.

While an undergraduate, David was employed by the Seattle Public Schools Proyecto Saber Program where he tutored and counseled at-risk Latino high school students in math and English composition. David was the President of the Hispanic Business Association and was honored as one of the 40 emerging leaders under 40 years of age by the University of Washington's View Points Magazine.

David worked for a year prior to law school at a Seattle law firm that concentrated on Immigration Law. In 1994, David was accepted to the University Of Illinois College Of Law and later became the President of the Latino/a Law Students Association while at the College of Law. While in law school David participated with other law students in developing a law course entitled "Latinos in the law" taught by Professor Francis Boyle.

At the time the University of Illinois and the University of California at Berkley were the only law schools in the country offering this course to law students. David postponed law school for a semester due to his Mother's passing from breast cancer.

Upon David's return, he enrolled into the University Of Illinois College Of Commerce MBA Program and graduated in August 1998 with a JD/MBA. After graduation, David briefly worked in Santa Clara, California with the Intel Corporation's legal department.

David returned to Illinois in 2000 and accepted a position with the office of the Cook County State's Attorney, where he was assigned to the Appellate Division. Mr. Herrera spent the last 17 years working for the Cook County State's Attorney's Office and was assigned to the Felony Trial Division from 2008-2017. David was responsible for the prosecution of felony offenses including violent crimes, sex crimes, and weapon and narcotic offenses.

David has tried over 40 felony jury trials in Cook County and over 500 bench trials. Mr. Herrera is currently employed with the Luisi Legal Group where he practices as a criminal defense attorney primarily representing minority clients. Mr. Herrera strongly believes in restorative justice and is committed to fairness in the courtroom.

Mr. Herrera is very active within the Chicago legal community. He was recently awarded the Chicago Bar Association Vanguard Award. He has served as the President of the National Hispanic Prosecutors Association, member of the board of directors and judicial evaluations committee for the Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois.

David has been a guest speaker for the National Bar Association and served on the American Bar Association's Minorities in the Law committee. He currently serves as community outreach chairperson for the Puerto Rican Bar Association and was presented the community service award by the Latin American Police Association.

In addition, for the past eight years, David has headed the Hispanic Lawyers Association and Puerto Rican Bar Associations Annual Food Basket Drive. Mr. Herrera has been a speaker at the Benito Juarez Community Academy Teen Summit against violence and has been a guest speaker for career symposium at Hubbard high school, and has participated in Mock Trail Programs.

He is also a member of the University of Illinois Latina/o Alumni Association and was a guest speaker for the organization's Success Stories in Government network series. David was presented the Alumnus of the Year award by the University of Illinois Latino/a Law Students Association and was presented the community service award by the Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois.

Mr. Herrera has been a co-sponsor for Casa Catalina's annual Cinco de Mayo fundraiser and in 2014 Mr. Herrera led efforts to provide goods for Casa Catalina's families in need. This year, Mr. Herrera was also able to lead efforts to provide food to 152 families that are involved with the St. Aloysius Parish food services. David resides in the Belmont Cragin Neighborhood on the northwest side of Chicago (6th judicial Sub Circuit) with his wife Maria and their daughters, Isabella and Gabriella.

Tell us something we would be surprised to learn about you.

I wake up everyday at 5:30 AM to do exercise regiment and I have been doing this for over 20 years. I believe in a strong mind and fit body. I maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to work hard and stay healthy for my family. I believe that a judge is more than an administrator of justice.
