Please submit an essay that explains your legal background, why you are qualified for this position and why you seek this position.

I graduated from Southern Illinois University School of Law in 2006. I graduated Magna cum Laude and served on the SIU Law Journal. After law school, I worked in the Coles County State's Attorney's Office as an assistant state's attorney. In 2008, I opened my own private law practice in Charleston, Illinois. I was elected Moultrie County State's Attorney (county seat: Sullivan) in 2012 and re-elected in 2016. I am currently serving my second term as state's attorney.

My experience in both government and the private sector will help me bring a balanced perspective to the bench. I have also been a trial lawyer for my entire legal career. I have tried everything from first degree murder to simple traffic tickets. Furthermore, I have been active in the Illinois State Bar Association. I have served on the Traffic Laws and Courts Section Council since 2011 and I am the current Secretary of the council. I have presented at 11 Illinois State Bar Association continuing legal education seminars for other attorneys since 2010.

I am seeking this position for many reasons. First, the position lends itself well to my gifts and talents (such as reading, writing, and decision making). Second, I am committed to providing the residents of the Sixth Circuit and Moultrie County with a fair and courteous courtroom experience. I want to provide the best experience possible for criminal and civil litigants. Third, my age (currently 37 and 38 when I would take office in December) is an asset to voters since I will be able to stabilize the Moultrie County Resident Circuit Court Judge position long term much like the Hon. Dan Flannell did. Judge Flannell, whose seat I am seeking, was 36 when he was elected. Finally, being a judge is a step up in my legal career and a dream of mine.

It is one of the best jobs in the world and it would be a great honor to be elected and serve the community in this capacity.

Tell us something we would be surprised to learn about you.

I drove dirt track race cars as a teenager and then into my early twenties.
